Washing Bamboo Clothing

by | Apr 5, 2024 | Uncategorized

Bamboo fabric seems to be all the craze right now.  We love it because of its soft, buttery texture, cooling feel and hypoallergenic properties that won’t irritate sensitive skin.

It is a moisture-wicking and breathable material that aids in keeping us dry. It also helps regulate body temperature and prevent chafing – perfect for newborns and babies.

Another benefit of bamboo is that it offers UPF protection, providing a natural built in layer of coverage that acts like sunscreen inside your clothes.  This is not only good for babies now, but for helping to avoid skin issues in the future.

Because of its naturally smooth texture, bamboo doesn’t wrinkle easily.  As a matter-of-fact, it is supposed to be wrinkle resistant, thanks to its tightly knit fibers.

Another good quality, bamboo is an antibacterial and odor resistant fiber because of its antifungal properties.  You won’t have to worry about unpleasant scents getting trapped inside clothing.

Bamboo is also very eco-friendly and good for the earth. Since it is the fastest growing tree on the planet, it doesn’t require the use of chemicals.  Bamboo can grow up to a foot every 24 hours – good news for harvesting and replanting.

With so many positive attributes, it’s important to know how to properly care for bamboo fabric.  Delicate fibers can maintain longevity with gentle handling.

The first and obvious step in treating and washing bamboo clothing is to read the label.  There could be specific instructions to help avoid shrinkage and fading – not to mention, directions on how to keep its fibers strong.  Otherwise, small holes can start to develop.

If ever in doubt, there are easy ways to remember how to wash bamboo.  It doesn’t have to be complicated.  Just use what you already know.

The first thing to remember is that bamboo is cooling.  So, wash with cold water. This will help prolong the life of the material and preserve its color.

Bamboo is gentle on delicate skin. Set your washer to the delicate cycle and add in a gentle or mild detergent.

Bamboo is very eco-friendly and chemical free. Your stain remover should be the same.  Always avoid harsh chemicals such as bleach when treating bamboo.

While drying, remember that bamboo is moisture-wicking.  Just like it will pull moisture away from sensitive skin and evaporate, it will also absorb more water than other materials when washed.

Air drying on a folding rack is ideal and will help garments dry faster.  However, you can use a dryer on a low heat setting. Try removing the bamboo pieces while they are still a little damp and allow them to air dry the rest of the way.

Finally, remember that bamboo is a wrinkle resistant material. Ironing isn’t necessary. But, if you’d like to crisp things up a bit, turn the pieces inside out and iron on low to medium heat.

It really is that easy!
